A girl named Dorothy and her little dog Toto, who live in Kansas, are flown away with their house by a tornado and transported to a magical land called Oz.

The house falls on the Wicked Witch of the East and kills her instantly; Dorothy retrieves the witch’s ruby shoes.

To find a way back to Kansas, the kind Witch of the North advises her to go to the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, who resides in the Emerald City.

To get there, she must follow the yellow brick road.

Along the way, Dorothy meets a scarecrow who complains that he has no brain, a tin woodsman who regrets that he has no heart, and a lion who laments his lack of courage.

Following Dorothy, all three of them go to see the Wizard to have their wishes granted .

The Wizard agrees, provided they bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Dorothy does so, by throwing a bucket of water on the witch, which makes her melt.
